Just like you

In the middle of a guided meditation, our instructor asked us to think about a person in our lives whom we loved and appreciated. We were to think about all the things they do that we are grateful for, things about their personality that we admired, how they made us feel, how much they meant to us, how blessed we are to have them in our lives. I was in my happy-place, very relaxed, very peaceful.

Next, she asked us to turn our attention to someone whom we are struggling to love. Ummm… I didn’t think much of that idea. Weren’t we supposed to be calming our minds?

And then she said “and try and see them as just like you”.

Oooh ok… Just like me?

She is scared, “just like you!”
She wants to be loved, “just like you!”
She wants to be accepted, “just like you!”
She wants to matter, “just like you!”
This person — is “just like me!”

Three little words, one tiny statement. I so needed that reminder.

  1. Powerful! What an effective way of challenging ourselves to love whom we see as unlovable!
    Thank you for sharing this.

And whilst writing, I’d like to take this opportunity of wishing you and your loved ones a peaceful, happy and Christ-centred Christmas.

    Best wishes,

    Carol
